Mary Madsen Hallock and her husband Doug never wanted to visit Mexico, but in 1960 her parents insisted that they all meet for Christmas in the high-mountain city of Oaxaca de Juarez. Mary never dreamed that, at the age of seventy-nine, her parents would retire there and run Casa Colonial, a small garden hotel in the center of the city.

I will be traveling to Oaxaca shortly and this book left me feeling like I had spent the afternoon with the author chatting and learning about her family's experiences in and understanding of Oaxaca. I just visited Oaxaca, Mexico for the first time... Before going I purchased and read the 2 most popular "travel" books to find out something about the area before my trip. After reading those I felt that I wanted to read more, and accidentally came across this book. The title was puzzling, but I downloaded a sample and read it. After reading the sample I purchased the book. What a bargain it was.
The book is a wonderful story about the authors parents, their eventual move to Oaxaca, and their love affair with the area, and its friendly people. The insights and stories in the book provide more "travel" information than any of the popular books. This book provides an insight into the area, it shops, restaurants, places to visit, people to look up, that you cannot get elsewhere.
After my visit I read the book again, and am looking forward to a return visit.
Enjoy the book, visit Oaxaca, visit the artisans, shops, and attractions mentioned in the book ....stay at the Palacio Borghese, enjoy dinner on the roof at Casa Oaxaca....and believe me you will have a vacation to remember.

I've read a lot of books by expats in different parts of the world, and I myself live in Mexico,
I enjoyed learning more about the indigenous cultures of Mexico.This was a positive, well written story. I would recommend highly to anyone wanting to learn about Oaxaca.
